Arsenal Football Formation

Starting Lineup

Bergkamp · van Persie · Henry · Ødegaard · Rice · Vieira · A. Cole · Saliba · Timber · Campbell · Seaman

Arsenal looks to dominate the ball and squeeze the pitch with a high press in this 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to control the center of the park and pin the opposition back through heavy numbers in the middle. The goal for Arsenal is to maintain high possession and use technical players to move the ball through the thirds.

Seaman stays between the posts as the last line of defense. In front of him, a two man central defense consisting of Campbell and Saliba must hold a high line to keep the team compact. Saliba uses his recovery pace and reading of the game to cover space behind him, while Campbell acts as a dominant force to win the header and clear the lines. Because there are only two defenders, they must step up to intercept passes and prevent the opposition from finding space between the lines.

The midfield is the engine of this lineup, using a five man unit to occupy every central lane. Timber operates as a defensive pivot to shield the back line and protect the two center backs. Beside him, A. Cole and Rice provide a strong presence to win the second ball and recycle possession. Vieira drives forward with the ball to transition from defense to attack, while Ødegaard plays as the attacking ten behind the striker. This group works to compress the midfield and ensure the opposition cannot play through the center.

The attacking unit utilizes three attackers to stretch the defence. Henry operates as the central striker, using his pace and finishing to find space in the channels. Bergkamp plays from the left as an inverted winger who looks to cut inside and link up play, while van Persie occupies the right flank to create scoring chances. These three press the opposition back line to force a long ball and create chances through quick combinations. The movement of Henry and the creative runs of Bergkamp and van Persie are designed to isolate defenders in one on one situations.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows the team to control the tempo of the game. The five man midfield makes it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes. Additionally, the ability to press high in coordinated waves allows the team to win it back high up the pitch. This high positioning keeps the opposition pinned in their own half.

This 2-5-3 formation relies on a dominant midfield to dictate the rhythm of the match. It is best suited for games where the team can control the ball and pin an opponent into a low block.
