Starting Lineup

J. Auer · Bolla · Raux Yao · Cvetkovic · Beljo · Grgic · Amane · Schaub · Seidl · Jansson · Hedl

SK Rapid focuses on aggressive verticality and overwhelming the opposition in the final third through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to play with massive attacking intent, pushing numbers forward to pin the opponent back. The intent is to win the ball back high up the pitch and use the extra numbers in the middle and front to create constant pressure.

Hedl starts in goal to manage the space behind the back line. Raux Yao and Cvetkovic operate as a central pair of defenders in a high line. They must be prepared to step up to intercept long balls and cover the vast space left behind. Because there are only two central defenders, they often have to defend man-to-man or drop quickly to prevent runs in behind. The unit functions as a high block that tries to squeeze the space for the opposition.

The midfield is a dense five man unit designed to dominate the center of the pitch. J. Auer and Bolla act as a double pivot to shield the two defenders and provide a base for the build up. Grgic and Amane operate as two eight players who occupy the half spaces to link the play. Schaub plays as the attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find pockets of space between the lines. This group works to recycle possession and press in pairs to force turnovers in the middle third.

SK Rapid uses three attackers to stretch the defence across the pitch. Beljo acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. Seidl and Jansson operate as wide wingers who stay high and wide to pull the opposition full backs out of position. They look to isolate one on one situations or make runs in behind the defensive line. The front three press from the front to prevent the opponent from playing out from the back, often forcing a long ball that the central defenders can win.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in the midfield through the five man line. This makes it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the center. Another strength is the capacity to use wide overloads when the wingers and midfielders combine to overload the flanks. The speed of transition is also a key factor, as the team can move from a winning of the ball to a shot on goal very quickly.

This 2-5-3 formation is a high risk high reward system centered on intense pressing and offensive volume. It is best suited for games where SK Rapid needs to break down a low block or dominate a team that struggles with physical intensity.
