Starting Lineup

Beara · Horvat · Holcer · Jusufi · Stanković · Čajkovski · Vukas · Bobek · Petković · Galić · Džajić

This team focuses on heavy defensive solidity and quick transitions using a 5-2-3. The lineup is built to absorb pressure in a low block before hitting the opposition with direct verticality. By sitting deep, the team invites the opponent forward to create space for breaking quickly in the wide areas.

Beara stays between the posts to manage the defensive line. A back five provides a narrow defensive block where Čajkovski acts as the central anchor to win the header and clear the lines. Horvat and Holcer sit on either side to defend zonally, with Horvat playing as the right centre back and Holcer covering the left. The wing backs, Stanković and Jusufi, are tasked with providing width, but they must track back to form a compact five when out of possession.

The midfield operates as a double pivot to shield the defence. Vukas and Bobek work together to protect the space in front of the back five. Bobek and Vukas need to win the second ball and immediately look to find the attackers. They act as the connection between the defensive unit and the front three, often sitting deep to deny the turn of opposition midfielders and then pushing forward to recycle possession once the ball is won back.

In the final third, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Galić acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. On the flanks, Džajić and Petković operate as wide wingers who stay high to provide an outlet for the transition. Džajić and Petković will look to isolate a one on one wide or deliver early crosses into the box. The movement of the wing backs, Stanković and Jusufi, allows for overlaps to create overloads in the wide channels.

One major advantage is the ability to maintain compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. The formation also provides great speed of transition, as the three attackers are always ready to receive the ball and run in behind. This setup allows the team to switch play rapidly from one flank to the other to find space.

This 5-2-3 formation relies on a disciplined defensive unit and rapid counter attacks. It is best suited for facing teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their high defensive line.
