Lecce prioritizes defensive stability and central congestion through a 4-5-1 formation. The team aims to sit in a mid-block to deny space between the lines and force the opposition into wide areas. The defensive unit starts with 1 in goal, who acts as the final line of defense. In the middle of the pitch, the team uses a double pivot with 5 and 7 to shield the defence. These two players are responsible for intercepting passes and breaking up play. Ahead of them, 10, 11, and 8 occupy the half-spaces and the central channels. 11 and 8 provide the energy to press the opposition and carry the ball forward, while 10 works to connect the defensive and attacking lines. This five-man midfield allows Lecce to compress the midfield and squeeze the space when they do not have the ball.
The attacking side of the formation relies on 9 playing as a lone striker. The role for 9 is to hold up the ball and press the opposition back line while waiting for the midfielders to push up. Instead of a traditional front three, the width comes from the midfielders who can push high to support the lone man. By crowding the middle with five players, the team can easily pick up runners and deny the pivot of the opposition.
