Lecce prioritizes defensive stability and central congestion through a 4-5-1 formation. The team aims to sit in a mid-block to deny space between the lines and force the opposition into wide areas. This system is built to play a reactive style of football where the focus is on winning the ball in the middle third and breaking quickly.
The defensive unit starts with 1 in goal, who acts as the final line of defense. The back four functions as a zonal line with 4 as the right centre back and 3 as the left centre back. 2 plays as the right back and 6 plays as the left back to guard the flanks. These defenders must hold the line and stay compact to prevent through balls. They work to cover for one another and win the second ball to keep the pressure on the opponent.
In the middle of the pitch, the team uses a double pivot with 5 and 7 to shield the defence. These two players are responsible for intercepting passes and breaking up play. Ahead of them, 10, 11, and 8 occupy the half-spaces and the central channels. 11 and 8 provide the energy to press the opposition and carry the ball forward, while 10 works to connect the defensive and attacking lines. This five-man midfield allows Lecce to compress the midfield and squeeze the space when they do not have the ball.
The attacking side of the formation relies on 9 playing as a lone striker. The role for 9 is to hold up the ball and press the opposition back line while waiting for the midfielders to push up. Instead of a traditional front three, the width comes from the midfielders who can push high to support the lone man. When the team wins the ball, 10, 11, and 8 look to run into the space behind the defense. This creates chances through quick combination play and allows the forwards to exploit the transition.
A primary strength of this formation is the numerical superiority in the central areas. By crowding the middle with five players, the team can easily pick up runners and deny the pivot of the opposition. The formation also offers great compactness when defending a lead, making it very difficult for teams to find gaps. This allows the side to stay solid and wait for the right moment to counter at pace.
This 4-5-1 lineup provides a platform for a disciplined defensive performance. It is most effective when facing teams that dominate possession, allowing Lecce to stay compact and strike on the break.
