Sundowns look to dominate the game through heavy possession and control of the central areas in a 3-5-2. This formation is built to play a controlling style of football that relies on controlling the tempo and suffocating the opposition in their own half. By using a three man defense and a crowded midfield, the team aims to keep the ball and dictate the rhythm of the match.

Williams sits between the posts to anchor the back line. In front of him, Kekana acts as the central defender to win headers and organize the unit. Lebusa and Mudau operate as the wide centre backs in a back three, where they need to cover the spaces left by the wing backs. Lebusa and Mudau must be ready to step up into midfield to help progress the ball, while Kekana holds the line to provide security. The defensive unit works to squeeze the space and keep the lines close together when out of possession.

The midfield is a dense area featuring a five man group that provides constant passing options. Zwane and Mkhulise act as the two holding midfielders to shield the defense and recycle possession. Esquivel, Morena, and Modiba operate further up the pitch to connect the defense to the attack. Morena and Modiba drive forward with the ball to push into the half spaces, while Esquivel looks to find the feet of the strikers or play through the lines. This heavy presence in the middle allows Sundowns to win the second ball and keep the opposition pinned back.

Up front, the team uses two forwards in a partnership to challenge the opposition center backs. Mashego and Sales work together to lead the line, often combining in tight spaces to create chances. Mashego acts as a pressing centre forward to trigger a press from the front, while Sales looks to make runs in behind to exploit the space. The attack is built through quick combinations, with the midfielders looking to deliver early passes to the forwards. The presence of two strikers forces the opposing defenders to stay narrow, which creates room for the midfield to arrive late into the box.

One major advantage for Sundowns is the numerical superiority in midfield which makes it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes. The team can also use the wide centre backs to create overloads in the middle of the pitch. This setup allows for a very high press in coordinated waves, making it hard for the opposition to play out from the back.

The 3-5-2 formation provides Sundowns with a way to control the center of the pitch through constant ball retention. This lineup is best suited for games where the team needs to dominate a lower block opponent through superior numbers in the middle.
