Starting Lineup

Sundowns want to control matches through heavy ball retention and high pressing, utilizing a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the center of the pitch and create numbers in every area of play. By keeping the ball in tight spaces, the team forces opponents to chase the game, allowing them to dictate the tempo and rhythm.

Williams starts in goal to organize the defense and distribute the ball. The defensive unit consists of a back three featuring Lebusa, Kekana, and Mudau. Lebusa and Mudau act as the wider center-backs, ready to cover space or step into midfield when needed, while Kekana remains central to win the second ball. This back three can shift into a wider line to defend against crosses or squeeze the space to compress the midfield.

The midfield engine is the heart of the Sundowns system, operating with a combination of deep and advanced roles. Zwane and Mkhulise act as the double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Esquivel, Morena, and Modiba operate in the pockets between the lines to connect the defense to the attack. Morena and Modiba work to drive forward with the ball and occupy the half-spaces, while Esquivel links play and helps win the ball back high up the pitch.

Up front, the team employs two forwards in a partnership of Mashego and Sales. Mashego and Sales work together to press the opposition back line and make runs in behind. They do not stay static but rather move to create link-up play between the lines or pull defenders out of position. This movement allows the attacking midfielders to arrive late into the box and exploit the gaps created by the two strikers.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages, particularly through numerical superiority in the midfield. By having five players in the central corridor, Sundowns can easily outnumber opposition pivots. The system also provides the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to play out from the back. Wide players can also quickly switch play to stretch the defense when the center is blocked.
