Chelsea relies on a high press and rapid transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. The team aims to win the ball back high up the pitch to attack quickly and catch the opponent out of position. This formation is built to play a vertical game that puts immediate pressure on the opposition in their own half.

Petrovic stays in goal to organize the defence and command his area. The back line functions as a five man unit with Joelinton at the left of the central trio and A. Santos at the right. Caicedo sits in the center to cover the space and win the second ball. Cucurella acts as a left wing back to spread wide and overlap the winger, while James plays as an attacking wing back on the right to push high. The defensive unit can sit deep or step up to squeeze the space and set the offside trap.

The midfield is a two man unit consisting of Enzo and Palmer. Enzo works to connect the defensive and attacking lines by dropping deep to receive the ball and play short from the back. Palmer has the license to carry the ball forward and play through the lines to find the attackers. They must work together to protect the center and recycle possession when the team needs to switch play to the other side.

Up front, Chelsea uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Sancho operates as a wide winger on the left to cut inside, while Estêvão plays on the right to hug the touchline. Delap acts as a lone striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. The front three press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. This formation creates many chances for runs in behind and cutbacks from the byline.

This formation offers several tactical advantages. The wing backs, James and Cucurella, provide wide overloads to pin the last defender and create space in the middle. The team can also press in coordinated waves because the midfield and attack are positioned close together to squeeze the space. This creates a compact defensive block that makes it difficult for opponents to bypass the midfield.

This 5-2-3 formation combines defensive strength with a direct attacking identity. It is best used to break down teams that defend in a low block and require constant pressure.
