Starting Lineup

Sancho · Delap · Enzo · A. Santos · Bruno G. · Caicedo · Cucurella · James · Estêvão · Palmer · Petrovic

Chelsea plays with a high pressing identity using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and move forward with speed. The team wants to control games through heavy pressure and quick transitions to the front three.

Petrovic stays in goal to command the area and organize the back line. The defense uses a back three of Caicedo, A. Santos, and Bruno G. who defend zonally. Caicedo plays as a covering defender to sweep behind the line and intercept passes. Cucurella and James act as attacking wing backs on each flank. Cucurella and James push high to overlap the wingers and deliver crosses into the box. The three centre backs work to maintain a compact unit to protect the central zone.

The midfield functions as a double pivot with Enzo and Palmer in the center. Enzo acts as a deep lying playmaker with a great passing range to recycle possession and build from the back. Palmer operates as an inverted eight who looks to receive on the half turn and drive forward. This pair connects the defense to the attack by playing through the lines. Enzo helps to shield the defense while Palmer makes late runs into the box to support the forwards. They work to squeeze the space in a mid block to prevent opposition movement.

The attacking unit uses three forwards to attack the opposition back line. Delap acts as a lone striker and a target man to hold up the ball and win the second ball. Sancho plays as a wide winger on the left to provide width. Estêvão acts as an inverted winger on the right who looks to cut inside and create chances. These players press from the front to force long balls and win it back high up the pitch. The movement is designed to create runs in behind and isolate wide players in one on one situations.

One major advantage for Chelsea is the ability to create wide overloads from the overlapping runs of James and Cucurella. The formation also offers great compactness when defending in a low block. The speed of transition allows the team to hit in behind on the transition with the front three.

This 5-2-3 formation is a high pressing system designed to disrupt teams that play short from the back. It works best against opponents who struggle to handle intense pressure and verticality.
