Moving ahead of him, B.Aguilera and A.Bran occupy the central spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. B.Aguilera works to press in a mid block to win the ball back, while A.Bran looks to carry the ball forward and drive into the half spaces. This trio works to compress the midfield and deny the turn of opposition playmakers.

In the final third, Costa Rica utilizes two forwards in a partnership to stretch the opposition. M.Ugalde and A.Martínez operate as a front two, often looking to hit in behind on the transition. M.Ugalde works as a pressing centre forward to force long balls, while A.Martínez looks to hold up the ball and link up play between the lines. When the team moves forward, A.Lassiter and G.Taylor push high to provide crosses from the wide areas, creating combinations with the strikers to exploit the space behind the opposition full backs.

This formation offers several tactical advantages for Costa Rica. The back five provides massive compactness when defending deep, making it very difficult for teams to play through the middle.
