Starting Lineup

Pertovic · Colwill · Cucurella · Huijsen · James · Caicedo · Enzo · Yildiz · Palmer · Madueke · Sesko

Chelsea aims to play with a high press and heavy verticality in a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup relies on winning the ball high up the pitch to catch the opposition out of position. By committing many players forward, Chelsea looks to overwhelm the opponent through direct attacking movements and rapid transitions.

Pertovic stays between the posts to manage the space behind the high defensive line. Colwill and Huijsen operate as a pair of central defenders who must hold a high line and be ready to cover large areas of grass. Because the team uses only two central defenders, they must be fast to track runners and capable of playing out from the back to start attacks. The wide players in the middle line, Cucurella and James, act as wide midfielders who provide the necessary width to prevent the opposition from crowding the middle.

The central midfield uses a double pivot consisting of Enzo and Caicedo to control the center of the pitch. Caicedo works to shield the defence and intercept passes, while Enzo acts as a deep lying playmaker to distribute the ball and progress through the thirds. This pair must work hard to cover the space left behind the advanced wide players. They serve as the link between the two central defenders and the front four, ensuring the team can recycle possession when the initial attack is blocked.

The attack is composed of four players working in close combinations to split the defence. Madueke and Yildiz occupy the wide areas as inverted wingers who look to cut inside and create space. In the center, Sesko acts as a pressing centre forward to lead the line, while Palmer plays as a second striker in the hole to find space between the lines. This front four is designed to pin the last defender and create chances through quick passing and movement, often looking to hit in behind on the transition.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to build play from the back. The team also creates wide overloads when James and Cucurella push forward to support the wingers. This setup allows Chelsea to maintain high pressure and force mistakes in the final third of the pitch.

This 2-4-4 formation is a high risk, high reward system built for aggressive attacking football. It is best suited for games where the opponent plays a high line and can be punished through quick, direct play.
