Starting Lineup

Pertovic · Colwill · Cucurella · Huijsen · James · Caicedo · Enzo · Yildiz · Palmer · Madueke · Sesko

Chelsea focuses on defensive solidity through a 5-4-1. This lineup is built to play a counter attacking style where the team sits deep to deny space. The goal is to remain hard to beat and use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition during transitions.

Pertovic stays between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit employs a back five consisting of Caicedo, Colwill, and Huijsen in the center. Caicedo acts as the primary stopper to win the second ball, while Colwill plays as a ball playing defender to distribute from the back. James and Cucurella operate as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width but dropping back to form a narrow defensive block when the ball is lost. The central trio works together to hold the line and protect the space behind the midfield.

The midfield works as a four man line that shifts to cover the pitch. Enzo occupies the left central midfield role to drive forward with the ball and connect the defense to the attack. Palmer plays as the right central midfielder, using his passing range to play through the lines to the forwards. Madueke and Yildiz act as the wide midfielders, tasked to press in a mid-block and track back to help the wing backs. This unit works to squeeze the space between the lines and deny the opponent time on the ball.

Sesko leads the line as a lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and wait for support. The attack relies on quick breaks to catch the opposition out of position. Madueke and Yildiz provide width by hugging the touchline, creating space for Palmer to move into the half spaces. When the team carries the ball forward, the wingers look to get to the byline and whip it in for Sesko to attack the near post or far post. The team moves in combinations to break the lines during rapid transitions.

A major advantage of this formation is the ability to maintain compactness when defending in a low block. The presence of three central defenders gives Chelsea stability against direct teams. Furthermore, the formation allows for wide overloads when James and Cucurella overlap the midfielders, creating chances to cross on the run.

The 5-4-1 formation makes Chelsea a difficult team to break down. This system is ideal for facing high possession sides that the team can punish with quick transitions.
