Penders (18)Nottm Forest relies on a compact defensive identity and quick transitions when using a 4-5-1. This formation is built to sit deep and protect the central areas before looking to catch the opposition on the break. The lineup aims to squeeze the space between the lines to deny the opponent time on the ball.
M. Penders stays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line operates as a flat back four that maintains a mid-block to prevent long balls. Vušković and E. Quaresma act as the central defenders, with Vušković providing coverage while E. Quaresma looks to win the second ball. Burrows and El Hilali play as full backs, tasked with tracking back to protect the flanks and staying narrow to help the center. The defensive unit moves as a single block to ensure they do not get split by through balls.
The midfield functions as a five man unit designed to congest the center of the pitch. Anderson and Brazhko form a double pivot to shield the defence and win possession in front of the back four. J. Silva and Iling-Junior operate in the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Mastantuono plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, tasked to find pockets of space and press aggressively to win the ball high. This midfield group works to recycle possession and quickly find the forward when the ball is recovered.
C. Archer leads the line as a lone striker, acting as the focal point for the attack. He works to hold up the ball and allow the midfielders to push forward during transitions. The attackers look to exploit the space left behind the opposition defense through runs in behind. When Nottm Forest wins the ball, the wide midfielders and full backs look to provide width and stretch the defence. The team creates chances through quick combinations and trying to isolate defenders in one on one situations.
A major advantage of this formation is the ability to hold a compact shape that makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. The double pivot of Anderson and Brazhko provides stability that allows the other midfielders to push higher. Nottm Forest can also use the speed of transition to punish teams that commit too many players forward. This setup allows the team to switch from a mid-block to an attacking stance very quickly.
This 4-5-1 formation is built to be defensively solid and rely on clinical counter attacks. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their high line.
