Aston Villa Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Ushido · Donut · Kenpachi · Michael · Tosa (Boey) · Niko · Luca · Kai · Ale · Kharnage · HotoAston Villa relies on a defensive identity built to absorb pressure and hit teams on the break. This 5-4-1 formation is built to play a low block and force opponents into wide areas before launching quick attacks. The lineup focuses on staying compact and making it hard for the opposition to find space between the lines.
Kenpachi stays on the line to provide the last line of defense. The back line consists of a back three with Ushido acting as the central figure to clear the lines and win the header. Tosa and Michael sit on either side of Ushido to cover the space and provide defensive depth. Hoto and Kharnage act as attacking wing backs who push up to provide width when the team wins the ball, but they must track back quickly to form a defensive line of five.
A four man midfield sits ahead of the back three to protect the central zones. Luca plays as a single pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. Niko and Ale occupy the central roles to control the tempo and recycle possession. Kai works alongside Niko and Ale to press the opponent and link the defensive and attacking lines. This midfield unit works to squeeze the space and deny the turn to opposition players.
The attacking plan revolves around a lone striker, Donut, who must hold up the ball and wait for support. Donut acts as a target man to receive long balls and lay it off to oncoming runners. When Aston Villa transitions, Hoto and Kharnage charge forward to stretch the defence. The goal is to use the width provided by the wing backs to create chances through cutbacks or to find Donut in one on one situations.
One major advantage for Aston Villa is the ability to stay compact when defending in a low block. The five defenders and four midfielders make it very difficult for teams to play through the middle. Another strength is the speed of transition when Hoto and Kharnage burst forward to support the lone striker. This allows the team to move from a defensive posture to an attacking one with great pace.
This 5-4-1 formation is a defensive specialist lineup. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession where Aston Villa can sit deep and counter at pace.
