The midfield operates as a three man unit to shield the defense and link the play. Galindo and Mendizábal occupy the central roles, with Galindo working to win the second ball and Mendizábal acting to connect the defensive line to the attack. De la Fuente plays as an attacking ten behind the two forwards, looking to find pockets of space to create chances. Mexico uses a two man partnership up front with Hermosillo and Fragoso. Hermosillo operates as a striker who can hold up the ball, while Fragoso looks to make runs in behind the defense.
