Peñarol looks to control games through a high press and rapid transitions using a 4-5-1. This formation is built to squeeze the pitch and win the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents off balance. The lineup focuses on being hard to break down while maintaining enough numbers in the middle to dictate the tempo of the match.
M. Campaña stays between the posts to organize the back line. The defensive unit operates in a flat back four with G. Varela acting as an attacking full back to provide width. J. Rodríguez and Léo Coelho sit as the central defenders, where Coelho uses his aerial strength to win headers and Rodríguez acts as a covering defender. M. Oliveira stays wide on the left to support the attack while ensuring the defensive block remains compact.
The midfield is a five man unit that uses a double pivot to control the center. N. Nández and E. Remedi work as the holding pair to shield the defence and win the second ball. N. Nández is known for his high pressing intensity and energy in the middle. Léo Fndz, B. Rodríguez and D. Terans occupy the central and half space roles to connect the defensive and attacking lines. These three players aim to recycle possession and find ways to break the line with vertical passes.
A. Álvarez operates as a lone striker and acts as a pressing centre-forward to force long balls from the opposition. He must hold up the ball and wait for the midfielders to join the attack. The attacking movement relies on the midfielders making late runs into the box to support him. Peñarol uses the width provided by G. Varela and M. Oliveira to stretch the defence and create space for the central players to combine in tight spaces.
Peñarol gains a clear advantage through numerical superiority in midfield which allows them to dominate the center of the pitch. The ability to press in a mid-block makes it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The team also benefits from the speed of transition when the midfield wins the ball and immediately looks to hit in behind on the transition.
This 4-5-1 formation is built to overwhelm opponents through collective pressing and midfield dominance. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to squeeze a technically gifted opponent or break down a side that sits deep.
