Starting Lineup

SÁNCHEZ (Hugo) · DOS SANTOS (Giovani) · LOZANO (Irving) · CHÁVEZ (Luis) · LUNA (Braulio) · AGUIRRE (Javier) · FLORES (Ignacio) · SEPÚLVEDA (Guillermo) · (C) CARDENAS (Raúl) · VILLEGAS (José) · Oswaldo (SÁNCHEZ)

Santos aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike with speed through a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup focuses on being defensively solid while using the wide areas to stretch the opposition. The team relies on a quick transition to catch opponents off guard once possession is regained.

Oswaldo sits between the posts to oversee the defensive line. The back unit functions as a back five with CHÁVEZ acting as the central defender to hold the line. Cardenas, the captain, operates as the right centre-back and provides leadership in the box. SEPÚLVEDA plays as the left centre-back to provide cover for the wide areas. VILLEGAS and FLORES act as attacking wing backs to provide width and support the attack. They push high to support the front three, leaving the three central defenders to defend zonally.

The midfield consists of a two-man midfield with LUNA and AGUIRRE. LUNA plays as the left central midfielder to connect the defense and the attack. AGUIRRE works alongside him to help press in a mid-block and win the second ball. These two players must cover a lot of ground to protect the space between the lines. They look to recycle possession and find the forwards quickly when the ball is won.

Santos uses three attackers across the front to pressure the opposition back line. SÁNCHEZ plays as a lone striker to hold up the ball and fight for long balls. LOZANO operates on the left as an inverted winger to cut inside and create chances. DOS SANTOS plays on the right to provide width or cut inside to shoot. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the defenders. This movement allows the wing backs to overlap the winger and deliver crosses into the box.

The tactical advantages of this Santos lineup include the ability to create wide overloads when VILLEGAS and FLORES push forward. The team can also maintain compactness when defending by sitting deep in a narrow defensive block. This allows them to hit in behind on the transition when the opposition is caught out.

This 5-2-3 formation is built to be a defensive wall that strikes through quick counter attacks. It is best suited for matches against teams that control possession and leave space behind their defensive line.
