Argentina National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
DIBU (MARTINEZ) · MONTIEL · CUTI (ROMERO) · OTAMENDI · ACUÑA · ENZO (FERNANDEZ) · DE PAUL · MACALLISTER · MESSI · JULIÁN (ÁLVAREZ) · DI MARÍAArgentina plays a highly vertical style of football using a five two three formation. The identity of the team rests on being able to win the ball and transition into attack with immense speed. This lineup is built to stretch the defence and exploit the space behind opposition defenders through quick direct passing and individual brilliance.
DIBU starts the build up from the back with his commanding presence and shot stopping ability. The defensive unit works as a back five. ENZO holds the middle to play short from the back and help the team progress through the thirds. Beside him, OTAMENDI and CUTI act as the central defenders, with CUTI using his aggressive tackling to intercept passes and stop runners. On the flanks, MONTIEL and ACUÑA act as attacking wing backs who push high to provide width and track back to cover the wings when the team loses possession.
The midfield operates as a two man unit tasked with controlling the middle of the pitch. DE PAUL acts as the engine, pressing aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and covering huge amounts of ground to support both lines. MACALLISTER works alongside him to connect the defence and attack, often dropping deep to receive on the half turn and then driving the ball forward. This pairing must be able to squeeze the space in the center to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.
In the attacking phase, Argentina uses three forwards to pressure the back line. MESSI plays on the right as an inverted winger who cuts inside to use his passing range and dribbling style to create chances. DI MARÍA operates on the left, often looking to get to the byline to deliver early crosses into the area. JULIÁN acts as a pressing centre forward, working to pin the last defender and find the feet of teammates in tight spaces. The team attacks in combinations to create runs in behind or cutbacks from the byline.
One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads through the overlapping runs of MONTIEL and ACUÑA. The team also benefits from a great speed of transition once the ball is recovered in the middle third. Having the talent of MESSI allows the team to isolate wide players in one on one situations, making it very difficult for defenders to defend the pitch.
This five two three formation provides a solid base for a team that wants to strike quickly through elite individual talent. It is best suited for games against opponents that use a high line and can be caught on the break.
