Starting Lineup

BONO · Montiel · Martinez (Quarta) · Valentin (Gómez) · Acuña · Redondo · Galoppo · Castaño · Nico González · Beltrán · Mastantuono

Seeking to exploit transitions through quick vertical movement, River operates with a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup aims to stay compact and strike hard when the ball is won in the middle third. The team plays a direct style that uses the wings to stretch the defence.

Bono starts in goal to organize the defensive unit. The back line stays in a deep block using a back five. Redondo sits in the center to hold the line and clear the lines when pressure mounts. Valentin and Martinez act as the side centre-backs to cover the wide areas. On the flanks, Acuña and Montiel function as attacking wing backs to provide width during the build up. They push high to support the attack but must track back quickly to defend the space behind them.

The midfield is built around a double pivot that controls the central zone. Castaño and Galoppo occupy the two central spots to manage the tempo. Castaño works to shield the defence and drop into space to receive the ball from the defenders. Galoppo is more mobile, looking to carry the ball forward and arrive late into the box to support the attack. This pairing connects the defensive block to the front three by playing through the lines.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to pressure the opposition back line. Beltrán leads the way as a pressing centre-forward, using his presence to win the second ball. Nico González and Mastantuono play as inverted wingers who cut inside to occupy the half-spaces. Their movement creates space for Acuña and Montiel to overlap the winger and deliver crosses. This formation relies on combinations in tight spaces to break the line and find Beltrán.

One clear strength of this lineup is the ability to create wide overloads. By having Acuña and Montiel push up, the team forces the opposition to deal with extra numbers on the flanks. Additionally, the team shows great compactness when defending. The five defenders and the two midfielders work to squeeze the space, making it very hard for opponents to play through the middle.

The 5-2-3 formation provides River with a resilient defensive foundation while allowing for rapid counter attacks. This is an ideal formation for facing teams that dominate possession and leave large gaps in the defensive transition.
