Inter focuses on winning the ball back high up the pitch and playing through the lines with a 3-5-2. This formation allows the team to control the center of the park while using wing backs to provide width. Yann Sommer acts as the last line of defense, starting the build up from the back. A back three consists of Acerbi, Bastoni, and Bissect. Acerbi uses his aerial strength to defend set pieces and clearances, while Bastoni acts as a ball playing defender who can step up into midfield to create an overload. Bissect provides cover on the right side of the defensive block. The defenders work as a unit to squeeze the space and maintain a high line to keep the team compact.

The midfield is a three man midfield with a carrier and a deep lying playmaker. Hakan Calhanoglu operates as the pivot, looking to recycle possession and switch play to the flanks. Nicolo Barella drives forward with the ball to link the lines, while Henrikh Mkhitarian works to press aggressively and win the second ball in the middle. This trio ensures the team can control the tempo and protect the back three when the opposition counters.

Inter employs two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defense. Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram work in close combinations to trouble center backs. Lautaro Martinez often drops deeper to link play, while Marcus Thuram makes runs in behind to exploit space. On the flanks, Federico Dimarco and Denzel Dumfries act as attacking wing backs. Dimarco pulls wide to deliver early crosses, and Dumfries uses his pace to overlap the winger and reach the byline.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages, specifically numerical superiority in midfield when the wing backs push high. The team can also create wide overloads by having the wing backs and wide midfielders occupy the same zone.
