Austria National Football Team Formation

Creation DateMay 7, 2025

Starting Lineup

Friedl · Trauner · Posch · Mwene · Laimer · Wimmer · Baumgartner · Schmid · Seiwald · Sabitzer · Lucic

Austria aims to control the tempo through heavy pressing and quick transitions using a 3-5-2. This formation is built to play a vertical game that forces opponents into mistakes high up the pitch. By using a central core of midfielders, the team looks to win the ball back quickly and move the play forward with direct passing.

Lucic starts in goal to organize the defensive unit from the back. The back line consists of a back three with Trauner, Friedl, and Posch. Friedl and Posch act as wide centre backs to cover the spaces left when the wing backs push forward, while Trauner sits in the middle to command the area and win headers. This three man unit stays compact to deny space between the lines and can step up to set the offside trap.

The midfield works to dominate the central areas of the pitch. Seiwald and Sabitzer act as a double pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Sabitzer uses his passing range to break the line, while Seiwald focuses on winning the second ball and pressing aggressively. Schmid plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers to connect the lines and arrive late into the box. Mwene and Laimer provide the width as wing backs, tasked to spread wide and support the attack.

The attacking line uses two forwards to stretch the opposition defence. Wimmer and Baumgartner operate as a partnership, with Wimmer looking to make runs in behind and Baumgartner acting to hold up the ball for others. They press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. The goal is to create combinations in tight spaces and use the overlapping runs from Mwene and Laimer to provide crosses into the box.

Austria possesses several tactical advantages with this lineup. The central presence of Sabitzer and Seiwald allows for numerical superiority in midfield, which helps control the game. The team also benefits from the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and Schmid to squeeze the space. This allows the team to win it back high up the pitch and launch immediate attacks.

This 3-5-2 formation provides a robust platform for high pressing and rapid attacking transitions. It is best suited for games against opponents who play a possession based game and can be caught out of position.
