This group connects the defense to the attack by looking to recycle possession, pass short from the back, and play through the lines.

Van Basten leads the line as a lone striker and a target man. He is able to hold up the ball and find the feet of runners moving from deep. Robben and Rensenbrink move into the half spaces to create central presence, which allows the team to combine in tight spaces. The attackers work to pin the last defender and create runs in behind to exploit any gaps in the opposition.

This formation offers the advantage of being able to press high in coordinated waves. The Netherlands can also achieve wide overloads when Stam and Krol move forward to support the midfield. Another strength is the ability to squeeze the space in the center, using Cruyff and Gullit to deny the turn of the opposition and maintain compactness when defending.
