Arsenal looks to control games through a high press and quick verticality in a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch and use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition. The goal is to create chaos in the final third while maintaining a strong presence in central areas to prevent counter attacks.

Raya acts as the last line of defence while playing out from the back to start attacks. The defensive unit sits in a back five where Zubimendi and Saliba act as the central pillars. Saliba uses his recovery speed to cover large spaces, while Gabriel provides aerial strength to win the header during set pieces and crosses. Timber plays as a right wing back to provide width and overlap the midfield, whereas Lewis Skelly operates on the left as an attacking wing back to push higher. The defensive unit works to squeeze the space and protect the central zones.

In the middle of the pitch, Arsenal uses a two man midfield to link the defence and attack. Rice works as a carrier to drive the ball forward and shields the defence by intercepting passes. Wirtz plays as a creative force from deep, looking to play through the lines with his exceptional passing range. These two players must cover a lot of ground to ensure the team remains compact when the ball is lost. Rice and Wirtz act as the engine to progress through the thirds and recycle possession when the front three are marked tightly.

The attacking front line consists of three players designed to pin the last defender. Gyokeres acts as a pressing centre forward who can hold up the ball to allow others to join the attack. Saka operates as an inverted winger on the right, looking to cut inside and create chances, while Doue plays on the left to provide directness. These attackers press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. The formation creates many opportunities for Saka and Doue to receive the ball in one on one situations after Timber or Lewis Skelly push forward.

This lineup offers several tactical advantages. The back five provides great compactness when defending against teams that play with multiple strikers. Arsenal can also create wide overloads by having the wing backs push up to join the wingers. The combination of Rice and Wirtz in the middle helps the team win the second ball and transition quickly.

Arsenal uses this 5-2-3 to dominate games through aggressive pressing and rapid transitions. This formation is best suited for facing teams that play a high defensive line or rely on slow buildup.
