Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Zinchenko · Timber · Calafiori · Saliba · Sterling · Trossard · Saka · Rice · Ødegaard · Jorginho · RayaArsenal aims to dominate through heavy possession and controlling the central zones with a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the pitch and maintain a high line to win the ball back quickly. By playing with such a high number of players in the middle, Arsenal can dictate the tempo and keep the opposition pinned in their own half.
David Raya starts in goal to play out from the back and initiate attacks. The defensive unit relies on a two man back line consisting of Saliba and Calafiori. Saliba acts as a dominant presence in the air and covers the space behind while Calafiori steps up to intercept passes and disrupt the opposition. Because this formation uses only two central defenders, the defenders must be ready to step up and set the offside trap to prevent runners from getting through.
The midfield is the engine of this formation, utilizing a five man unit that provides immense control. Zinchenko and Timber occupy the deeper roles to protect the two defenders, while Rice drives forward with the ball to link the lines. Jorginho sits in the middle to recycle possession and find the feet of the attackers, while Ødegaard operates as the advanced ten to create chances in the final third. This grouping allows the team to compress the midfield and prevent the opponent from playing through the center.
In the attacking phase, the team uses three players across the front to stretch the defence. Sterling plays as a central striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender, while Saka and Trossard act as wide attackers to create width. Saka often looks to isolate a one on one wide by staying high up the pitch, and Trossard cuts inside to find pockets of space. The movement between these three players creates constant threats through runs in behind and quick combinations in tight spaces.
One major advantage for Arsenal is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very difficult for opponents to retain possession. The team can also use the wide players and the midfield runners to create overloads in the half spaces. This setup allows for a very fast transition from a defensive block to a sustained attack, catching the opponent before they can recover their positions.
This 2-5-3 formation is designed for teams that want to suffocate the opposition through high pressing and ball retention. It is best suited for games where the club wants to dominate the ball against a low block.
