Austria National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Krankl · Bican · Pezzey · Alaba · Hanappi · Sara · Sindelar · Hasil · Ocwirk · Prohaska · KonselAustria relies on a heavy central presence to dictate play using a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the center of the pitch and overwhelm the opposition through a massive midfield presence. The team plays a high pressing style that aims to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately attack. By packing the middle, the team seeks to control the tempo and force the opponent into mistakes.
Konsel operates as the lone goalkeeper behind a very thin defensive line. The back line consists of just two central defenders, Pezzey and Alaba. Alaba functions as a ball playing defender with a wide passing range to switch play, while Pezzey uses his aerial strength to win headers and clear the lines. This two man unit must stay very tight to cover the wide spaces left by the lack of full backs and must be ready to defend in a mid block or step up to set the offside trap.
The midfield is the heart of this Austria team, consisting of six players working in layers. Hanappi and Ocwirk act as a double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. Sara joins them to create a three man midfield with a carrier to help progress through the thirds. Ahead of them, Prohaska, Hasil, and Sindelar play in the half spaces to find the feet of the striker. These players work to combine in tight spaces and press aggressively to trigger a press when the opposition tries to build play.
Up front, the team utilizes two forwards in a partnership with Bican and Krankl. Krankl is a natural finisher who makes sharp runs in behind, while Bican works to hold up the ball and link up play with the advancing midfielders. They press the opposition back line to force a long ball and create space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. This attacking group relies on quick one two passes and movement to split the defense with a through ball.
The main tactical advantage of this formation is the massive numerical superiority in midfield. This allows the team to recycle possession and control the game through the center. Another strength is the ability to press in coordinated waves, as the six midfielders can squeeze the space and overwhelm the opponent in the middle third. This makes it very difficult for other teams to play through the lines without being intercepted.
This 2-6-2 formation is designed to suffocate opponents who try to play through the center of the pitch. It is best suited for matches where Austria can maintain high possession and pin the opposition back into a low block.
