Prioritising defensive solidity and rapid transition, Atlético Nacional employs a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit in a mid-block and wait for the opposition to commit men forward before hitting them in behind. The goal is to deny space in the middle while keeping the team compact for as long as possible.

D. Ospina guards the goal and organizes the defensive unit. A flat back four provides the foundation, with F. Román acting as a right back to cover the wide area. Beside him, W. Ditta and W. Tesillo operate as the central defenders, with Ditta focusing on winning the second ball and Tesillo providing cover. C. Cándido plays as the left back to maintain the line. The unit functions to stay close together, making it hard for opponents to play through the lines.

The midfield is a five man block designed to squeeze the space in front of the back four. J. Campuzano and M. Uribe work as a double pivot to shield the defence. M. Uribe stays deep to protect the center, while J. Campuzano looks to intercept passes. In front of them, E. Cardoná and Y. Asprilla act as central midfielders to link the play, while M. Hinestroza operates in the half spaces to connect the midfield to the attack. This group works to win the ball back high up the pitch when the trigger is pulled.

Atlético Nacional uses a lone striker in A. Morelos to lead the line. Morelos acts as a target man to hold up the ball and allow the midfielders to move up the pitch. He presses the opposition back line to force a long ball, which the defenders can then collect. The midfielders support him by making runs into the box to create numerical superiority in the final third. The attack relies on quick combinations and finding the feet of the striker to break the lines.

This formation offers several tactical advantages. The double pivot of J. Campuzano and M. Uribe provides great compactness when defending. The team can also create wide overloads if the full backs push up to support the wingers. Most importantly, the setup allows for a high press in coordinated waves once the ball enters the middle third.

The 4-5-1 formation allows Atlético Nacional to remain difficult to break down. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession where the goal is to defend deep and counter at pace.
