Starting Lineup

Krankl · Bican · Pezzey · Alaba · Hanappi · Sara · Sindelar · Happel · Ocwirk · Prohaska · Hiden

Austria focuses on central control using a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup is designed to dominate possession and use a high press to win the ball back high up the pitch. The goal is to overwhelm the centre of the park to control the tempo of the game.

Hiden sits between the posts to start the build up. The defensive unit consists of a back two made of Happel and Pezzey. Because there are no full backs, Happel and Pezzey must defend man to man or defend zonally while covering large amounts of space. They need to be able to win the header and clear the lines when the opposition plays long. They must step up to set the offside trap and stay compact to prevent runners from getting behind them.

The midfield is the engine of this Austria lineup. Alaba, Sara, and Ocwirk act as a three man midfield to shield the defence. Alaba works as a deep lying playmaker using his passing range to play short from the back and progress through the thirds. Sara and Ocwirk work to intercept passes and win the second ball. Ahead of them, Hanappi, Prohaska, and Sindelar act as the attacking connection. These three play through the lines to find the forwards. They combine in tight spaces to pull the opposition out of position and look to deliver early crosses or through balls.

Up front, Bican and Krankl work as a pair of forwards. They do not play alone but rather as part of a combined attacking unit. They press from the front to force a long ball from the opponent. Bican often tries to hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to push up, while Krankl looks to hit in behind on the transition. The movement of the six midfielders behind them creates many options for cutbacks from the byline or through balls to split the defence.

A major advantage is the numerical superiority in midfield. With six players, the team can easily squeeze the space and win it back high up the pitch. This also allows them to recycle possession and switch play rapidly to find wide areas. The formation allows for quick transitions where the midfielders can carry the ball forward to support the two strikers.

This 2-6-2 formation is a high risk and high reward system centered on midfield dominance. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to cope with intense central pressure.
