England National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Shaw · TAA · Maguire · Stones · Kane · Saka · Foden · Palmer · Bellingham · Rice · RamsdaleEngland looks to dominate games through a high press and quick verticality using a 5-2-3. This formation is built to control the game by squeezing the pitch and using wide players to stretch the opposition. The Three Lions aim to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately look to hit the lines.
Ramsdale sits between the posts to act as a sweeper behind the defensive line. The back line functions as a back three with Rice playing as the central defender to cover the space. Maguire and Stones operate as the wide centre backs, where Maguire uses his aerial strength to win headers and Stones acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks. Shaw and TAA act as attacking wing backs, with Shaw providing width on the left and TAA pushing high to deliver crosses from the right.
The midfield relies on a two man unit that must cover huge amounts of ground. Palmer plays as an inverted eight, looking to receive on the half turn and find pockets of space. Bellingham operates in the right half space to drive forward with the ball and press aggressively to win the ball back. These two players connect the defence to the attack by receiving from the centre backs and recycling possession when the front three are marked.
In the final third, England utilizes three attackers to pin the last defender. Kane plays as a lone striker, often dropping deep to find the feet of the striker and create link up play with the runners. Foden operates as an inverted winger on the left, cutting inside to create chances, while Saka stays wider on the right to isolate a one on one. This attacking trio works to press the opposition back line and create runs in behind through quick combinations.
One major strength of this lineup is the ability to create wide overloads when Shaw and TAA push up to join the wingers. England also benefits from a high press in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The presence of Bellingham and Palmer allows for a strong transition from a mid block to a direct attack.
This formation provides a heavy attacking presence while maintaining a solid base of three centre backs. It is best suited for games where England needs to dominate possession and overwhelm the opponent in the final third.
