Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Zubimendi · Rice · Havertz · G. Jesus · Ødegaard · Saka · Zinchenko · Timber · G. Magalhães · Saliba · RayaArsenal prioritizes control and high pressing in a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup focuses on controlling the center of the pitch and squeezing the space in the opponent half to win the ball back high up the pitch. The team aims to use high numbers in the middle to dominate possession and create passing lanes toward the front three.
David Raya operates between the posts to act as a sweeper behind a high line. The defensive unit consists of a two man central pairing of Saliba and G. Magalhães. Saliba uses his recovery speed to cover the space behind while G. Magalhães provides aerial strength and physicality. This pair plays out from the back to start attacks, relying on the midfielders to provide cover when the two centre backs step up to engage attackers.
The midfield is a dense five man block designed to dictate the tempo. Timber and Zinchenko occupy the defensive roles to shield the two centre backs, with Zinchenko often moving into the half spaces. Zubimendi acts as a deep lying playmaker to recycle possession and find teammates through the lines. Rice drives forward with the ball to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while Havertz operates as an attacking ten behind the striker to find pockets of space.
Arsenal uses three attackers to stretch the defence across the pitch. G. Jesus acts as a pressing centre forward who works to pin the last defender and link up play between the lines. Ødegaard plays on the left as an inverted winger who cuts inside to create chances, while Saka operates on the right to isolate a one on one wide. These forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition and trigger a press from the midfield.
This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. The presence of five players in the middle allows Arsenal to control the ball and switch play quickly. Additionally, the team can use wide overloads when the midfielders push high to support the wingers.
This 2-5-3 lineup is built to dominate possession and press high against teams that try to build from the back. It is most effective when facing opponents that struggle to handle heavy central pressure.
