Chelsea aims to play with a heavy emphasis on defensive solidity and quick verticality using a 4-5-1. This formation focuses on staying compact while waiting to strike through transitions. Cech guards the goal as the last line of defense. Makelele sits in the holding role to shield the defense and intercept passes, while Lampard works in a deeper role to drive forward and arrive late into the box. Robben and Hazard occupy the half spaces to carry the ball forward, with Zola playing as an attacking ten behind the striker. This group works to squeeze the space in the center and recycle possession when the initial attack fails.

In the final third, Chelsea relies on a lone striker in Drogba who acts as a target man to hold up the ball. Zola plays as a second striker in the hole to link play and provide creativity. Robben and Hazard operate as wide midfielders who often cut inside to create goal scoring chances. This setup creates many runs in behind and relies on the forwards to press the opposition back line to force turnovers.

The tactical advantages of this formation include a massive numerical superiority in the midfield which makes it very hard for opponents to play through the center. Chelsea also benefits from extreme speed of transition when Robben or Hazard win the ball. The ability to remain compact when defending a lead makes this formation very difficult to break down.

This 4-5-1 formation is built to control the center of the pitch and strike with lethal precision. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession where Chelsea can sit deep and counter at pace.
