Liverpool Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Lautaro/Julián · Salah · Díaz · Szoboszlai · Mac Allister · Gravenberch · van Dijk · Robertson · Frimpong · Konaté · AlissonLiverpool relies on a high press and rapid transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and attack the opposition with directness. The goal is to squeeze the space and force errors through intense pressure.
Alisson stays in goal and often sweeps behind the high line to cover any long balls. Within the defensive unit, a back five of Gravenberch, van Dijk, and Konaté maintains the line. van Dijk uses his aerial strength and passing range to lead the line and play out from the back. Konaté provides coverage and is dominant in the air. Robertson acts as an attacking wing back on the left, while Frimpong pushes up as an attacking wing back on the right to provide constant width.
Mac Allister and Szoboszlai form a two-man midfield. In this role, Mac Allister connects the defensive and attacking lines by receiving the ball and carrying it forward into the middle third. Szoboszlai acts as a carrier who presses aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. Both players must be ready to intercept passes and defend the space behind the attacking players to protect the team against counters.
Three players make up the attacking front line to stretch the defence. Díaz plays as an inverted winger on the left who looks to cut inside and move into the half spaces. On the right, Salah uses his dribbling to isolate defenders in one on one situations. Lautaro/Julián leads the attack as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender. Combinations are used to build the attack, often looking for cutbacks from the byline or runs in behind.
Wide overloads provided by Robertson and Frimpong give Liverpool a significant advantage. The formation allows for the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes. Additionally, the five-man back line ensures the team can stay compact when defending and quickly switch play to the wings to exploit space and isolate wide players in one on one situations.
This 5-2-3 formation is a high intensity lineup meant to overwhelm opponents. It is best suited for facing teams that try to play short from the back and struggle to bypass a heavy press.
