Bondo) · Youssouf Fofana (Samuele Ricci)Milan relies on a vertical, counter attacking style of play within a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to catch opponents on the break by exploiting gaps in the defensive line. Rapid transitions are the primary way the team moves forward.
Santiago Gimenez guards the goal to provide a secure base. Defending as a back five, the unit can shift as a single block. Laurienté acts as an attacking wing back on the right and Pulisic plays as the left wing back. Both players push high to provide width. In the center, Rafa Leao, Youssouf Fofana, and Reijnders form the core. Reijnders acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. Youssouf Fofana and Rafa Leao work to cover the central channels and defend zonally.
A double pivot featuring Theo and Walker manages the midfield. Walker works to shield the defense and win the second ball in the middle of the pitch. Theo acts as a carrier who can drive forward with the ball to connect the defensive and attacking lines. They work to squeeze the space and prevent opponents from playing through the middle. By sitting in a mid-block, Theo and Walker can trigger a press when the ball enters their zone.
Three forwards occupy the attacking phase. Jonathan Tah plays as an inverted winger on the left and Mosquera operates on the right. Maignan acts as the lone striker to find the feet of the players around him. Both Jonathan Tah and Mosquera often cut inside to stretch the defense. This creates space for Laurienté and Pulisic to overlap the winger and whip it in toward the box. Maignan stays central to hold up the ball and wait for teammates to arrive late into the box.
This Milan formation offers great speed of transition and wide overloads. The wing backs provide constant width, which forces the opposition to spread wide. Another strength is the compactness when defending, which makes it difficult for teams to find passing lanes. The ability to press in pairs also helps to win the ball high up the pitch.
This 5-2-3 formation is designed for quick, direct attacking football. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high line and can be punished by runners who hit in behind on the transition.
