The midfield is built as a five man unit designed to congest the center of the pitch. Borja and Garces act as a double pivot to shield the defence and pick up runners. Ahead of them, Sanchez/Solis and the other REFUERZO work to connect the defensive and attacking lines by recycling possession and pressing in a mid-block. Corozo/Muñoz operates as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find the feet of the striker or arrive late into the box to create chances.

In the attacking phase, the team utilizes a lone striker to hold up the ball and lead the press from the front. The forward must work to pin the last defender and create space for Corozo/Muñoz to operate in the hole. While the striker battles with the centre backs, the wide midfielders or the attacking ten look to pull wide and stretch the defence. The goal is to use the ball to split the defence with a through ball or deliver a cross on the run once the midfield wins the second ball.

One major advantage for Emelec is the ability to maintain compactness when defending, making it hard for opponents to play through the lines. By using a five man midfield, the team creates numerical superiority in the center to stifle play.
