Rangers Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Balogun (regen) · Souttar · Jefte · Tav (2021 Edition) · Raskin (C) · Dio · Hagi · Igamane · Cerny · Butland · Bionic CortesRangers want to control the game through extreme central density and high intensity. This lineup uses a 2-5-3 formation to dominate the middle of the pitch and squeeze the space in the opponent's half. The goal is pressing high and moving the ball through the thirds with a high volume of players. It is a formation designed to pin the last defender and force the opposition to struggle with the sheer number of players in the central zone.
Butland operates as the goalkeeper to sweep behind the high line when necessary. The defensive unit consists of a back two featuring Souttar and Balogun (regen). Souttar uses his aerial strength to defend the central area and clear the lines. Balogun (regen) acts as a ball playing defender to play short from the back and progress the ball into the midfield. These two must hold the line carefully because the team plays with so much aggression further up the pitch.
The midfield is the heart of the Glasgow Rangers system, utilizing a five man unit to control the tempo. Raskin (C) acts as the captain and sits in the pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Jefte plays on the left to carry the ball forward, while Tav (2021 Edition) operates on the right to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Dio and Hagi push into the half-spaces as two tens to find space between the lines. This central mass allows the team to win the second ball and trigger a press in a mid-block when possession is lost.
The attack utilizes three players across the front. Igamane acts as a lone striker to hold up the ball in tight spaces. Bionic Cortes plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and look for goal, while Cerny stays wide on the right to stretch the defence. These three press from the front to force a long ball and allow the midfielders to squeeze the space. Forwards often play one-two combinations to split the defence with a through ball.
A major strength of this formation is the massive numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By having five players in the midfield, Rangers can easily compress the midfield and deny the pivot of the opposition. The wide players like Dio and Hagi can also create overloads by pushing into the channels. This allows the team to win it back high up the pitch and break quickly before the opponent can recover their shape.
This 2-5-3 lineup is a high risk and high reward way to play that focuses on central dominance. It is best used when playing against teams that sit deep in a low block and allow Rangers to control the ball.
