Roma Football Formation
Starting Lineup
SVILAR · MANCINI · ANGELINO · NDICKA · RENSCH · PAREDES · KONE' · SOULE' · DYBALA · DOVBYK · PELLEGRINISeeking to play a direct and vertical style of football, Roma employs a 4-4-2 formation. The team aims to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly before the opposition can settle. This formation is built to move the ball through the thirds with speed and purpose.
SVILAR operates as the goalkeeper, commanding his area to organize the defense. The back four features RENSCH as the right back and ANGELINO at left back. MANCINI and NDICKA act as the central defenders, where MANCINI uses his strength to mark the striker and NDICKA covers the space behind. The full backs are expected to push up to provide width, while the central duo holds a high line to squeeze the space.
The midfield block is built around PAREDES, who sits deep to shield the defense and play short from the back. KONE' and PELLEGRINI work to carry the ball forward, with KONE' providing the engine to win the second ball. SOULE' acts as an attacking midfielder behind the strikers to connect the lines. PAREDES uses his passing range to break the line and find the attackers. This unit works to compress the midfield and deny the turn to opposition players.
Up front, the team utilizes a partnership of DOVBYK and DYBALA. DOVBYK serves as the target man, looking to hold up the ball and win the header in the box. DYBALA plays as a second striker, often cutting inside from the left to create something in tight spaces. The attack relies on link up play between the lines and runs in behind. DOVBYK can also pin the last defender to create space for DYBALA to arrive late into the box.
A primary strength of this formation is the ability to press in coordinated waves. The front three of DOVBYK, DYBALA, and SOULE' can trigger a press to win it back high up the pitch. Additionally, the team benefits from the speed of transition when they win the ball in the middle third. The movement of PELLEGRINI and the ability of the wide players to spread wide creates many opportunities to isolate wide players in one on one situations.
This 4-4-2 lineup focuses on a powerful central presence and rapid attacking movements. It is most effective against opponents that play a high defensive line or lack physical strength in the middle.
