Szymaniak and Overath are tasked with winning the second ball and connecting the defense to the attack. They must cover a lot of ground to protect the two central defenders while also looking to carry the ball forward. Their job is to recycle possession and ensure the ball reaches the four attackers in the final third.

In the attacking phase, Germany employs a heavy front line. H. Haller and U. Seeler act as a central partnership, with one often looking to hold up the ball while the other looks to run in behind. On the flanks, G. Dörfel and A. Brülls provide width. G. Dörfel and A. Brülls can cut inside to create more central presence or spread wide to whip it in for the strikers. This front four works to press from the front, attempting to win it back high up the pitch to catch the opponent out of position.

This formation offers significant attacking threat through the heavy presence of four forwards. The team can create wide overloads if the full backs push up to join the wingers. Germany also benefits from a high press that can trap the opponent in their own territory. However, the double pivot must be disciplined to avoid being bypassed in the middle of the pitch.
