England seeks to use a high press and quick transitions within a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to play with verticality, looking to move the ball from the back to the front line as quickly as possible to catch the opposition out of position. The Three Lions aim to squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch while staying compact to deny the opponent any room to breathe.

G. Banks operates between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line functions as a back three with N. Stiles acting as the central defender to sweep behind the line and clear the lines. Beside him, B. Moore and J. Charlton act as the wider center-backs, with B. Moore being dominant in the air to win headers during set pieces. R. Wilson and J. Armfield act as attacking wing backs, pushing high up the pitch to provide width and overlap the midfielders. This whole defensive unit stays close together to prevent through balls.

The midfield operates as a three-man midfield with a carrier and an attacking ten. B. Charlton sits in the advanced role to connect the midfield and the attack, looking to play through the lines. A. Ball and M. Peters occupy the central slots to control the tempo and press in a mid-block to win the second ball. These players work to link the defense to the forwards by recycling possession and looking to find the feet of the striker. They must also track back to help the wing backs when the team loses the ball.

England uses two forwards in a partnership to lead the attack. J. Greaves and G. Hurst work together to stretch the defence, with J. Greaves looking to make runs in behind and G. Hurst acting to hold up the ball for others. The attack is built by using the width provided by R. Wilson and J. Armfield, who whip it in for the strikers to attack the near post or far post. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition, allowing the back three to win the ball and start a break.

A major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads from the attacking wing backs. This forces the opposition to defend much wider, which opens space in the middle for B. Charlton to operate. England also benefits from a high level of compactness when defending, as the five defenders and three midfielders can squeeze the space very effectively. This makes it difficult for opponents to play out from the back against the Three Lions.

This 5-3-2 formation relies on a strong defensive foundation and quick movements from the front two. It is a lineup best suited for games where the team needs to absorb pressure and then hit the opposition on the transition.
