Starting Lineup

Aston Villa aims to control the tempo and win the ball back high up the pitch using a 4-5-1. This lineup is built to play a high press while remaining compact once the ball is lost. The team uses this formation to congest the middle of the pitch and force the opposition to play wide.

The goalkeeper starts the build up play from the back. A flat back four provides the main defensive line, with the CB on the left and CB on the right acting as the central defenders. A three man midfield with a carrier works to connect the defensive and attacking lines. The CMF sits as a single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. To his side, the AMF on the left and AMF on the right operate as two tens in the half spaces to create chances. The LMF and RMF provide width by spreading wide and tracking back to support the full backs. This midfield unit is designed to win the second ball and quickly progress through the thirds when the ball is recovered.

The attack relies on a lone striker, the CF, who acts as a pressing centre forward to lead the line. The CF must hold up the ball and find the feet of the striker to bring others into play. The LMF and RMF push high to act as wide wingers, while the AMF players arrive late into the box to support the central presence. When attacking in transition, the team looks to hit in behind on the transition by using quick passes to the CF.

One major advantage for Aston Villa is the ability to press high in coordinated waves through the five midfielders. This creates numerical superiority in midfield and allows the team to win it back high up the pitch. The formation also offers compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle.
