He is paired with R.Araújo, who provides cover and uses his speed to handle runners in behind. On the flanks, N.Nández acts as a defensive wing back to help secure the wide areas, while J.Piquerez pushes up to support the play.

The midfield is a heavy three-man central unit supported by two wide midfielders. M.Ugarte acts as the single pivot, sitting in front of the defence to shield the back four and intercept passes. Beside him, F.Valverde and N.de la Cruz work to cover large areas of the pitch, with Valverde using his immense work rate to drive the ball forward and connect the lines. This midfield trio works to win the second ball and ensure they are not bypassed easily.

In the attacking phase, Uruguay employs a lone striker in D.Núñez, who acts as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line. He works in conjunction with G.de Arrascaeta and F.Pellistri, who occupy the half spaces. G.de Arrascaeta looks to find the feet of the striker or play through the lines, while F.Pellistri provides width and looks to cut inside to create chances.
