Mallorca Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Dominic Greif · Maffeo · Valjent · Raillo · Copete · Mojica · Antonio Sánchez · Samu Costa · Cyle Larin · Sergi Darder · Dani RodríguezMallorca plays a very disciplined style of football where they focus on staying compact. They utilize a 5-4-1 formation to deny space in the middle. This lineup is built to stay defensively solid and strike quickly when the opponent loses the ball.
Dominic Greif sits in goal to organize the defensive unit. The back line functions as a five man block that can sit deep or push up to set the offside trap. Raillo sits in the middle to win the header and command the area. Valjent and Copete act as the wide centre backs to cover the gaps and pick up runners. On the flanks, Mojica and Maffeo act as attacking wing backs. Mojica will push high up the pitch to provide width on the left, while Maffeo will carry the ball forward to support the midfield.
In the middle of the pitch, a four man midfield sits in front of the back five. Samu Costa and Cyle Larin form a central pairing to shield the defense and win the second ball. Samu Costa works to intercept passes and recycle possession to keep the team stable. Cyle Larin is tasked to drive forward and link the defensive and attacking lines. Antonio Sánchez and Sergi Darder operate on the edges of the midfield. Sergi Darder uses his passing range to switch play and find the feet of the striker. Antonio Sánchez must track back to help the wing backs when the team is out of possession.
The attack is led by Dani Rodríguez who plays as a lone striker. He has to hold up the ball and work in tight spaces to bring the midfielders into the game. The team attacks in transition, looking to hit the opponent quickly. Mojica and Maffeo provide the width by overlapping the winger or pushing high to cross on the run. Dani Rodríguez looks to make runs in behind to exploit the space left by the opposition.
One major strength of Mallorca is the compactness when defending in a low block. It is very difficult for teams to play through the lines when they have five defenders and four midfielders working together. The team also benefits from the speed of transition when they win the ball high up the pitch or in the middle third. Using Mojica and Maffeo allows the team to stretch the defense and create width.
This 5-4-1 formation is a highly defensive formation built to frustrate teams that want to control the game. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to defend a lead or play against a much more possession heavy opponent.
