Starting Lineup

Alisson · van Dijk · Konate · Frimpong · Kerkez · Gravenberch · Mac Allister · Szoboszlai · Ekitike · Salah · Gakpo

Liverpool play with a high press and quick transition identity in this 5-2-3 formation. The Reds use this lineup to win the ball high up the pitch and strike fast before the opposition can get behind. This is a system built to stretch the defence and exploit spaces in behind by playing direct.

Alisson stays between the posts to sweep behind the high line and collect long balls. The back five consists of Gravenberch, Konate, and van Dijk acting as the central unit. van Dijk uses his aerial strength and positioning to lead the line while Konate covers the space behind. Kerkez acts as an attacking wing back on the left to provide width. Frimpong plays as the right wing back to push high and overlap the winger. This unit defends zonally to maintain a compact block.

The midfield features a two-man pairing with Mac Allister and Szoboszlai. Mac Allister uses his passing range to connect the defence and attack while sitting in a mid-block when needed. Szoboszlai presses aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. They must cover huge amounts of ground to prevent being bypassed. They work to recycle possession and find the feet of the striker when the front three move into position.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to pin the last defender. Ekitike acts as a pressing centre-forward to force long balls from the back. Gakpo plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and look for through balls. Salah operates on the right and cuts inside to find scoring opportunities. These three work to break the line and hit in behind on the transition.

A major advantage for Liverpool is the ability to create wide overloads. Kerkez and Frimpong push high to stretch the defence and allow the wingers to move into central areas. The team also possesses a great speed of transition. When Mac Allister or Szoboszlai win the ball, they can immediately play through the lines to Salah or Gakpo. This creates many one on one situations in the final third.

This 5-2-3 formation relies on intense pressing and rapid counter attacks. It is a system best suited for games against teams that play with a high line and leave space behind.
