Starting Lineup

Lyon relies on a heavy defensive foundation to launch quick transitions, utilizing a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting opponents in behind. By maintaining a compact defensive block, Lyon aims to congest the central areas and force the opposition to play out wide where they can be contained.

The goalkeeper acts as the first line of defense, commanding the area during crosses. In front of them, a back five forms the core of the defensive unit. The CDM occupies the central role as the main stopper, while the LCB and RCB provide cover and strength in the air. On the flanks, the LDM playing as LWB and the LDM acting as RWB are tasked with providing width. These wing backs must track back to form a narrow defensive block but also need to push up to support the attack. The midfield functions as a three man midfield with a carrier and two advanced creators. The CM sits in the pivot role to shield the defense and recycle possession. Ahead of them, the CAM playing as LCM and the CAM playing as RCM operate in the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. These two CAM players are expected to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch when the team regains it. They serve as the primary links, carrying the ball forward or playing through the lines to find the strikers.

Lyon utilizes two forwards in a partnership to lead the line. The ST playing as LS and the ST playing as RS work together to pin the last defender. They often combine in tight spaces to create runs in behind or use their strength to hold up the ball. One striker may drop slightly deeper to link up play while the other looks to attack the far post. The wide areas are serviced by the wing backs who aim to get to the byline and deliver early crosses to the two strikers.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its compactness when defending. By playing with a back five, Lyon can easily shift into a mid-block to deny central passing lanes. The setup also allows for quick transitions, as the wing backs and two CAM players can immediately spread wide to stretch the defense once the ball is won.
