Avranches Football Formation
Starting Lineup
GK · CB · CB · LB · RB · CDM · CM · CM · ST · LW · RWAvranches looks to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike quickly using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup focuses on a high press to force mistakes in the opposition half. The team aims to stay compact and use the wings to stretch the pitch during transitions.
The goalkeeper starts the build up from the back. In front of them, the defensive unit employs a back five with three central defenders. The RCB and LCB act as ball playing defenders to progress the ball, while the central CB stays deep to sweep behind the high line. On the flanks, the RWB and LWB act as attacking wing backs to provide width. These wide defenders must track back quickly to cover the space when the team loses possession.
The midfield consists of a double pivot. The CDM sits in front of the back three to shield the defense and win the second ball. Alongside them, the RCM and LCM operate as two central midfielders who connect the defense to the attack. One of these players often acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball, while the other helps to recycle possession and support the pressing triggers. This pairing must stay close together to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.
Up front, Avranches utilizes three attackers to pin the last defender. The RW and LW act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create space for the wide defenders to overlap. The ST operates as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line and hold up the ball for the oncoming midfielders. The attack moves in combinations, using quick passes to split the defence with a through ball or running in behind to exploit high lines.
A major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads from overlapping full backs. By having the RWB and LWB push high, the team forces the opposition to defend much more space. Another advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for the opponent to play out from the back. This setup also provides great compactness when defending in a mid-block.
Avranches relies on a high intensity game to disrupt the rhythm of the opposition. This 5-2-3 formation is best suited for matches where the team can exploit space on the counter at pace against a high defensive line.
