Independiente focuses on a defensive identity to deny space. This 5-4-1 formation is built to sit deep and stay compact. The goal is to frustrate the opposition by keeping a narrow shape and waiting for the chance to break quickly.

PINTORELLI guards the goal as the lone goalkeeper. The defensive unit uses a back five to clog the middle of the pitch. PORTILLO sits in the center to win headers and command the box. SIVIERO and MIÑO play as the side centre-backs to cover the space behind the wing backs. On the flanks, BASSE acts as a left wing back to help defend the wide areas, while WALLINGRE works as a right wing back to provide cover. This unit works together to maintain a narrow defensive block.

The midfield works as a bank of four to protect the back line. PANOZZO and WALLINGRE occupy the central roles to shield the defense and intercept passes. FRANCISCONI and FOCHESATTO sit on the left and right sides to track back and support the wing backs. This group focuses on winning the second ball and looking to play through the lines once they have regained control. They act as the link between the deep defenders and the lone forward.

LEZCANO leads the line as a lone striker. He is tasked to find the feet of midfielders and hold up the ball to allow others to join the attack. The attacking movement relies on the wing backs, BASSE and WALLINGRE, to provide width and deliver crosses into the box. When the team wins the ball, they look to hit in behind on the transition to catch the opposition out. LEZCANO must also press from the front to force a long ball from the opponent.

One strength of this Independiente lineup is the massive defensive numbers in the box. The combination of three central defenders and two central midfielders makes it very hard to break down. The team also benefits from the speed of transition, using the wide players to stretch the defense quickly.

This 5-4-1 formation is a reliable way to defend a lead or play against superior talent. It is best suited for match situations where the opponent has high possession and the team must stay in a low block.
