These players must track back to form a narrow defensive block but also push up to provide width when the team has the ball.

The midfield works as a flat four to maintain compactness. Zeki Çelik and Tyrick Mitchell play as wide midfielders to help the wing backs and squeeze the space on the flanks. In the center, Paulista and Victor Lindelöf operate as a double pivot. Paulista shields the defence, while Victor Lindelöf works to connect the defensive and attacking lines by recycling possession. This unit aims to win the second ball and deny the opponent any space between the lines.

Besiktas uses a lone striker in MERT to lead the line. MERT acts as a target man to hold up the ball and bring others into play.
