Starting Lineup

MERT (Doğan Alemdar) · Tyrick Mitchell (Rıdvan) · Zeki Çelik (Tariq Lamptey) · Paulista (Talha) · Victor Lindelöf (Emirhan) · Gedson (Emirhan İlkhan) · Thomas Partey (Salih Özcan) · Cerny (Arroyo) · Rafa (Muçi) · Davitashvili (Semih Kılıçsoy) · Mitrovic (Weghorst-Mustafa)

Besiktas aims to play a defensively solid style of football, relying on a compact 5-4-1 formation. This lineup focuses on sitting deep and waiting for the opposition to commit too many players forward. The goal is to protect the central areas and use the width provided by the wing backs to launch quick attacks once the ball is won back.

Mitrovic stays between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back five consists of Thomas Partey, Rafa, and Gedson acting as the central defenders. Thomas Partey and Gedson provide strength in the air, while Rafa acts as a ball playing defender to start the build up. On the flanks, Davitashvili and Cerny operate as attacking wing backs. These players must track back to form a narrow defensive block but also push up to provide width when the team has the ball.

The midfield works as a flat four to maintain compactness. Zeki Çelik and Tyrick Mitchell play as wide midfielders to help the wing backs and squeeze the space on the flanks. In the center, Paulista and Victor Lindelöf operate as a double pivot. Paulista shields the defence, while Victor Lindelöf works to connect the defensive and attacking lines by recycling possession. This unit aims to win the second ball and deny the opponent any space between the lines.

Besiktas uses a lone striker in MERT to lead the line. MERT acts as a target man to hold up the ball and bring others into play. The attack relies on the movement of the wide players to create chances. When the team moves into transition, the wing backs look to whip it in for MERT or find the midfielders making late runs into the box. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

This formation offers several tactical advantages, such as extreme compactness when defending in a low block. The presence of five defenders makes it very difficult for opponents to find gaps in the middle. Additionally, the team can create wide overloads when Davitashvili and Cerny push forward to support the midfielders. This allows Besiktas to shift from a defensive block to an attacking threat very quickly.

The 5-4-1 formation provides a reliable way for Besiktas to stay in games against much stronger sides. It is a setup best suited for facing teams that dominate possession and require a disciplined defensive unit to stop them.
