Netherlands National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Maatsen · Botman · de Ligt · Timber · Gravenberch · de Jong · Koopmeiners · Malen · Depay · Simons · VerbruggenThe Netherlands focus on heavy possession and a high press using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to control the center of the pitch and squeeze the opponent in their own half. By keeping many players in the middle, the Oranje look to pass through the lines and maintain constant pressure on the opposition.
Verbruggen acts as the goalkeeper to start play from the back. Both de Ligt and Botman work in a narrow defensive block, where de Ligt uses his aerial strength to defend crosses and win the second ball, while Botman works to cover space and hold the line. This back two requires the midfielders to drop back and protect the space behind them to deny the turn of any attacking players.
The five man midfield is the heart of the Netherlands. Timber and Maatsen sit in a double pivot to shield the defense. While Timber carries the ball forward, Maatsen works to intercept passes and protect the center. In front of them, de Jong operates as a deep lying playmaker, using his passing range to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Gravenberch plays in the half spaces to drive forward, while Koopmeiners plays as an attacking ten who looks to arrive late into the box to score.
In the attacking phase, the team uses three forwards to stretch the defence. Malen acts as a pressing centre forward to force long balls from the opposition. Depay plays as an inverted winger on the left, cutting inside to combine in tight spaces. Simons stays wide on the right to pull wide and stretch the defence. This front three works to pin the last defender and create room for the midfielders to exploit the gaps through the center.
This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield. With five players occupying the center, the team can easily recycle possession and win the second ball. Pressing in coordinated waves allows the front three and Koopmeiners to trigger a press and win it back high up the pitch. Controlling the tempo in this way allows them to dictate where the game is played.
This 2-5-3 lineup relies on dominating the center of the pitch through passing and control. It is best suited for games against opponents that play in a low block and allow the Oranje to win the ball high up the pitch.
