Starting Lineup

Arsenal looks to dominate with a high press and verticality through a 4-2-4. This formation is built to stretch the opposition and create constant pressure in the final third. By using a heavy front line, Arsenal aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately transition into goal scoring opportunities.

Raya stays between the posts to act as the first point of build up. The back line operates as a flat back four with Timber at right back and Skelly at left back. Saliba and Gabriel act as the central defenders, where Saliba uses his recovery speed and Gabriel provides aerial strength to defend the box. Timber is tasked to push up and provide width, while Skelly must stay disciplined to cover the space behind. The unit holds a high line to squeeze the space between the lines.

A double pivot controls the center of the park with Zubimendi and Merino. Zubimendi acts as the deep lying playmaker who sits in front of the defense to intercept passes and recycle possession. Merino works as a carrier to drive forward with the ball and connects the defensive unit to the attack. This pair must work hard to protect the zone between the midfield and the back four, especially when the team is stretched.

The attacking line consists of three players operating in high areas. Ødegaard and Rodrygo play as two forwards in a partnership, with Ødegaard often dropping into the hole to create through balls. They work to pin the last defender and create space for the wide players. Saka stays wide on the right to isolate defenders one on one, while Williams stays on the left to stretch the defense. The front four press in pairs to force a long ball from the opposition.

This lineup offers the advantage of intense pressure in the final third, making it very difficult for opponents to build out from the back. The presence of Saka and Williams provides wide overloads when the full backs push up. Arsenal also benefits from the speed of transition when Zubimendi or Merino win the ball and immediately find the front four.

The 4-2-4 lineup focuses on aggressive attacking and high intensity. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high defensive line or struggle to handle constant pressure.
