Man Utd Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Shaw · Dalot · Maguire · Lindelöf · Ugarte · Casemiro · Højlund · Mount · Garnacho · B. Fernandes · OnanaManchester United plays with an aggressive, high press using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and break quickly through the middle. The team looks to dominate the central zones and force a long ball from the opposition to regain control.
Onana acts as the goalkeeper and uses his passing range to help play out from the back. Lindelöf and Maguire operate as the two central defenders in a high line. Lindelöf acts as a ball playing defender to progress through the thirds, while Maguire is dominant in the air to win the header. They must hold the line and stay compact to deny the turn and protect the space.
The midfield consists of five players to control the pitch. Dalot and Shaw occupy the wide midfield positions to provide width and track back. Ugarte and Casemiro act as a double pivot where Ugarte presses aggressively to win the ball high and Casemiro uses his strength to shield the defence. Mount plays as an attacking ten in the hole, looking to receive on the half-turn and play through the lines to the forwards.
Three attackers lead the press from the front. Garnacho uses his dribbling style as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and create chances. B. Fernandes operates on the right and tries to split the defence with a through ball or whip it in to the striker. Højlund works as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender and hold up the ball. This formation creates many opportunities for runs in behind and cutbacks from the byline.
One major strength is the numerical superiority in midfield which helps Man Utd control the game. The team also uses its ability to press high in coordinated waves to win it back high up the pitch. This creates constant pressure and allows for a rapid speed of transition once the ball is won in the middle third.
The 2-5-3 is a high risk, high reward system designed for aggressive teams. It works best when facing opponents that play a slow build up and can be caught out by speed.
