RB Leipzig focuses on a high press and quick transitions using a 4-5-1. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike rapidly before the opposition can reset. Péter Gulácsi guards the goal and acts as the last line of defense. The back line operates as a flat back four, with David Raum playing as an attacking left back to provide width. Lutsharel Geertruida holds the right side, often overlapping to support the attack. In the center, Willi Orbán (C) acts as the leader, dominant in the air and organizing the defensive unit, while Castello Lukeba uses his recovery speed to cover behind when the line steps up.

The midfield is a five man unit designed to control the central areas and win the second ball. Nicolas Seiwald sits in a deep role to shield the defense and disrupt play. Christoph Baumgartner works alongside him to carry the ball forward and break the line with vertical passes. Xavi Simons operates in the half spaces to connect the midfield to the attack, while Antonio Nusa and Loïs Openda push higher to provide energy and press the opposition midfielders.

Benjamin Sesko leads the line as a lone striker, acting as a physical presence to hold up the ball. He works to pin the last defender, creating room for Xavi Simons and Antonio Nusa to make runs into the box. The attack relies on the movement of the wide midfielders who can cut inside or pull wide to stretch the defense. When RB Leipzig wins the ball, the goal is to find Sesko or hit in behind on the transition to catch the opponent out of position.

This formation provides the ability to press high in coordinated waves to force errors. The use of mobile midfielders like Loïs Openda and Antonio Nusa allows for immediate pressure from the front. By using a compact midfield, RB Leipzig can also easily shift into a mid block to deny the turn of opposing attackers.

The 4-5-1 lineup relies on intense pressing and rapid forward movement to overwhelm opponents. It is best suited for games against teams that try to build play slowly from the back.
