Lyon looks to dominate through heavy pressing and rapid transitions using a 4-3-3. Lucas Perri stays between the posts to act as the first point of distribution. The back line operates as a flat back four where Ainsley Maitland-Niles plays as an attacking full back to provide width on the right. On the left, Clinton Mata is tasked to defend the flank but can also push up to support the attack. In the center, Moussa Niakhaté and Duje Caleta-Car form a sturdy pairing, with Niakhaté acting as a ball playing defender to start attacks from the back while Caleta-Car provides aerial strength and covers the space behind the full backs.

The midfield functions as a three-man midfield with a single pivot. Nemanja Matic sits in front of the defence to shield the back four and recycle possession when the game slows down. Beside him, Jordan Veretout and Corentin Tolisso operate as the two eights. Tolisso is able to drive forward with the ball and connects the defensive and attacking lines, while Veretout works to find the feet of the striker and makes late runs into the box. This trio works to compress the midfield and prevent the opposition from playing through the middle.

Lyon uses three attackers across the front to pin the opposition back. Georges Mikautadze leads the line as a pressing centre-forward, constantly working to harass the defenders. On the wings, Malick Fofana and Rayan Cherki act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create space for the full backs. Cherki uses his dribbling style to beat his man in tight spaces, while Fofana looks to hit in behind on the transition. The front three combine in tight spaces to create chances or pull wide to stretch the defensive block.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, especially when the midfield trio joins the front three to squeeze the space. The team also finds success through the speed of transition, using the movement of the inverted wingers to create quick one on one situations. This allows Lyon to move from a defensive block to a goal scoring opportunity in seconds.
