Inter Football Formation
Starting Lineup
GRAVENBERCH · SOMMER · BASTONI · BISSECK · TAH · BARELLA · DUMFRIES · DIMARCO · TONALI · THURAM · LAUTAROInter operates with a highly vertical 3-5-2 formation. This lineup is designed to dominate the central channels and use aggressive transitions to punish opponents. By controlling the middle of the pitch, the team can quickly move from a compact defensive unit to a rapid attacking phase. This system allows Inter to maintain control while remaining dangerous in open play.
Sommer guards the goal while the defense sits in a narrow back three. Bastoni acts as a ball playing defender who can pass out from the back, while Bissect and Tah focus on winning the second ball and defending zonally. When the team sits in a mid block, the wingbacks Dimarco and Dumfries drop back to create a five man line. This helps the unit stay compact and prevents the opposition from finding space between the lines.
The midfield consists of a three man unit featuring Gravenberch, Barella, and Tonali. Barella is known for his high pressing intensity and ability to carry the ball forward through the middle. Tonali and Gravenberch help to compress the midfield and screen the defense. They work together to win it back high up the pitch and then immediately look to play through the lines to the forwards.
In the final third, the team uses a partnership of two forwards with Lautaro and Thuram leading the way. Lautaro acts as a pressing centre forward to force mistakes from the opposition back line, while Thuram provides the ability to run in behind. Dimarco and Dumfries push very high to provide width, often looking to overlap the winger or deliver early crosses. This creates constant movement and forces the opposition to defend in tight spaces.
One major advantage for Inter is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows them to control the tempo of the game. The ability of Dimarco and Dumfries to provide width creates wide overloads that force the opposition to shift constantly. Additionally, the speed of transition when Barella or Tonali win the ball allows the team to hit in behind on the transition before the opponent can set the offside trap.
The 3-5-2 formation provides Inter with a balanced way to control the center while remaining dangerous on the flanks. This lineup is best suited for facing teams that play with a single pivot or struggle to track runners.
